Monitors external developments in order to recognise overlapping solutions and encourage standards. Determines a long-term strategy (beyond 3 years). To identify at high level the technical components necessary to meet the project requirements, and recommend to the PMB the necessary level of resource for provision of such components. To produce an integrated project plan showing components, their timescales and dependencies, and appropriate milestones. To agree and pass detailed responsibility for provision of components to appropriate work- groups or equivalent. This shall be done against agreed deliverables and milestones. To monitor the progress toward deliverables

against the project schedule. To monitor the use of allocated GridPP resources against deliverables. To identify any problems with the schedule or use of resources. Where it is within the remit of the TB then take action to rectify. Where it is not within the remit of the TB to inform the PMB appropriately. To provide regular reports to the PMB and EB of the technical progress of the project. To ensure appropriate (technical) liaison with other projects and bodies to ensure that commonality is exploited wherever possible, and that no unnecessary duplication of work occurs. In particular to ensure that GridPP is fully integrated with DataGRID where appropriate (i.e. at least for the LHC stakeholders and where possible make use of this for other GridPP stakeholders). To constitute appropriate short-term instruments to address any issues which arise from time to time. (e.g. task forces). To recommend to the PMB an appropriate level of resource for longer term strategy (i.e. technical work not explicitly needed for project goals, but needed for experience for the longer term and/or relationship building). To take due account of international standards as set by the GGF, IETF and other bodies. Provide 2 cross members to the EB. These will normally be the Chair and Deputy Chair. Role of the Collaboration Board Chair To chair Collaboration Board meetings. To sit on the Project Management Board. To ensure that the Collaboration Board are kept fully aware of the progress of the project and any problems that might be arising. To ensure that the Project Management Board is full aware of the concerns and priorities of the members of the Collaboration Board. To liase between the Collaboration Board members, the Project Management Board and PPARC on matters of resource, staffing and funding. To be the first point of contact for external enquiries. To ensure that correct mechanisms are in place for GridPP dissemination activities. To liase where necessary between GridPP and other Grid projects both inside and outside PPARC., and with PPARC and other research councils and agencies and Industry. Role of the Resource Manager To collect information on the staff and equipment requirements identified by all elements of the GridPP project. To organise this information in a form that provides the project management board, and the agencies to which it reports, a clear view of the project requirements. To record and monitor the receipt and use of resources within the project and to present this information to the PMB on a regular basis. To assist with planning the optimal deployment of resources within the project and to help identify problems. To present to the PMB options for using resources as and when changes occur within the project or its funding.

To help the project planning in terms of the definition of deliverables, the resources they required, the dependencies between them, and the commitments to external organisations. To document the use of resources, the deliverables received, and maintain a current view of the state of the project. that the LHC Grid project is fully aware of the activities of GridPP; help to identify and bring to the attention of the PMB potential areas of development where GridPP could take a lead within the wider LHC computing and grid activities; identify areas where there are overlapping developments or other conflicts between the work of GridPP and other organisations and projects active in developments for the LHC Computing Grid, and seek satisfactory solutions; foster close relations between the Tier centres in the UK and the staff of the Tier 0+1 centre at CERN. Visibility of GridPP within the CERN community ensure that the contributions to LHC of GridPP, both at CERN and in the UK, are regularly brought to the attention of high-level CERN committees and management bodies; where opportunities arise organise assistance with publicity, demonstrations and other PR activities of GridPP within the CERN/LHC community. To keep an overview of both technical and experimental software developments, ensuring these developments are compatible Facilitate close working relationships between the UK experimental collaborations to identify common areas for the development of Grid enabled experimental software. Overview the major hardware purchases within GridPP to ensure compatibility with the needs of the experimental collaborations and between collaborations. Organise and convene regular EB meetings. Promote the use of the developing Grid structures for wide variety of computing needs in the whole of the UK Particle Physics community. PPARC e-Science Director Role PPARC e-Science Director or his representative will attend GridPP PMB meetings to represent PPARCs interests and wider aims and goals. The deliverables in each of the above areas are defined by the GridPP documents in: The Project Management Board (PMB) has assessed technical submissions from the experiments, following discussions between the EB (Experiments Board) and the Technical Assessment Group (TAG). For experiments [14.0 additional FTEs]: these resources must be w.r.t. an experiments requirements, emphasising grid-enablement of the experiment infrastructure, as described in the above input documents. The additional experiment posts (or 0.5 posts) will be allocated to ensure that the grid requirements of the experiments are met. Priority will be given to software development to integrate middleware elements for the experiments. For Testbed (Prototype Tier-1/Tier-A) [2.0 additional FTEs]: these resources should focus on the implementation of a UK testbed for the use of the experiments. 16.0 5.0 21.0 Notes: Previously Allocated refers to the WP8 (HEP applications) deliverables for individual LHC experiments and WP6 (Testbed) deliverables based at the prototype Tier-1 Centre. Tenders with manpower resources already allocated should indicate how the programme of work for previously allocated (half-)posts integrate with proposed developments. 2. We ask you to respond, on behalf of your Institute or, preferably, the group of Institutes representing the UK collaboration, with a short case (~1 page per additional post) consisting of: c. what are you already doing in this area? d. how would you implement the deliverables? (e.g. via recruitment and/or re-deployment of existing staff) j. a note of principal investigator and co-investigators (as in the PPARC RG2 form) 3. The deadline for submission [via e-mail to Steve Lloyd] is 12 noon on Friday 30th November. 4. The GridPP Peer Review Selection Committee (PRSC) will meet on Friday December 7th and determine priorities and allocations according to this input. Priority grading will be made according to the standard alpha gradings (up to alpha 5). 5. The recommendations of the PRSC will be subject to approval by the PPARC e-Science Director. 6. Results will be communicated to all Institutes as soon as possible after the PRSC meeting. A joint programme of work is explicitly encouraged for ATLAS/LHCb and CDF/D0. See the associated experiment documents. Other joint programmes are similarly encouraged, where Institutes have resources to do so. 7. For approved additional posts, an RG2 form should be submitted directly to Guy Rickett at PPARC for a spine point 13 post with end point December 31st 2004, as soon as the results are known. The initial stages of the recruitment process should proceed in parallel at your Institute. It is hoped that all posts will be established by April 2002 at the latest, in order to meet the requirements of a 3-year

programme. A total PMB allocation of 16 FTEs has been made. Approval has been given for up to 15 of these to be new posts. The Peer Review Selection Committee will determine how the posts are filled, according to the returns from Institutes (or group of Institutes). 8. The fixed end-point of December 31st 2004 reflects the timescale of GridPP and has been adopted to encourage the community to meet this timescale. PPARCs current e-Science funding was allocated from April 1st 2001 to March 31st 2004. The start point for GridPP is September 1st 2001 and therefore some rollover has been accepted. Grid Unlocked? PPARC has recently funded a 17m 3-year project to build a UK Grid for Particle Physics. GridPP is the collaboration of Particle Physicists and Computing Scientists from the UK and CERN, who started this pioneering work at the beginning of September 2001. GridPP will deliver the Grid software (middleware) and hardware infrastructure to enable testing of a prototype of the Grid for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project at CERN of significant scale. The GridPP project is designed to integrate with the existing Particle Physics programme within the UK, thus enabling early deployment and full testing of Grid technology and efficient use of limited resources. The project will disseminate GridPP deliverables in the multi-disciplinary e-Science environment and will seek to build collaborations with emerging Grid activities both nationally and internationally.
