P (persuade) Persuade means to try to convince someone to think the same way you do. Examples advertisements, newspaper editorials, junk mail, posters I (inform)

Inform means to give someone information about something. Examples news reports, research papers, encyclopedias, school news letters, instructions, pamphlets from health clinics, maps, timelines, schedules, charts, graphs

E (entertain) Entertain means to amuse someone. Examples fictional stories, comics, poems, jokes, riddles How to determine Authors Purpose. What

is the passage mostly about? Is it written in a funny or entertaining way? Does

it include opinion words or convincing ideas? Did the author provide many facts about a topic?

Distinguishing between Fact & Opinion FACT Is the statement something that can be checked?

Can this statement be proven to be true or false? OPINION

Does the selection include opinion words, such as I think, I feel, or should? Does the selection include descriptive

words to show feeling, such as great, best, awful, or wrong? Was this passage written to Persuade the reader to think a certain way? Inform the reader of facts about a topic?
