Spin-Momentum Locking in Cuprate HTSCs
Scientific Achievement
A form of spin-momentum locking, similar to
the strong linkage between electron spin and
momentum in topological insulators, has been
found in a cuprate high-temperature
superconductor (HTSC).

Significance and Impact
The results open a new chapter in the mystery
of HTSCs, suggesting that new, unexplored
interactions and mechanisms might be at play.

SARPES data show the presence of a nonzero
spin polarization in Bi2212. Blue and red
indicate spin-up and spin-down, respectively.

Research Details

Bi2212 studied using spin- and angle-resolved
photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES).
Revealed strong spin-orbit coupling and
momentum-dependent spin polarizations.
Modeling showed how local symmetry breaking allows for the observed spin texture.
